COUNCILMEMBER ROBERT C. WHITE, JR. STATEMENT ON AG SCHWALB’S LAWSUIT AGAINST ALI “SAM” RAZJOOYAN AND ASSOCIATES

WASHINGTON, DC — Councilmember Robert C. White, Jr. released the following statement in response to Attorney General Brian L. Schwalb filing a civil RICO lawsuit against Ali “Sam” Razjooyan and members of his family:

“I strongly support Attorney General Schwalb’s decision to bring this civil RICO lawsuit, and I commend him and his team for taking decisive action to protect tenants across the District.

For too long, residents in these buildings have endured dangerous and unacceptable living conditions — mold, pests, failing systems, and repairs that never come.

This lawsuit sends a clear message: exploiting tenants while misusing public resources meant to preserve affordable housing will not be tolerated in the District of Columbia. Property owners have a responsibility to provide safe, habitable housing. When they instead choose to cut corners, ignore repeated warnings, and leave families in unsafe conditions, there must be consequences.

Tenants should not have to fight year after year for the basic dignity of a safe home. Today’s action is a step toward accountability and relief for residents who have been living with uncertainty and risk. I will continue working with the Office of the Attorney General, our housing agencies, and tenant advocates to strengthen oversight, close loopholes, and ensure that slumlords are held responsible.”
