WASHINGTON, DC — The loss of these federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credits is extremely serious. These credits are one of the District’s most important tools for building and preserving affordable housing and losing them means losing homes our residents desperately need.

My committee shared these concerns earlier this year when we raised questions with DHCD about its management of 9% credits and the risks to our allocation. The reporting this week underscores why that scrutiny was necessary and why stronger transparency and accountability are essential.

The Housing Committee will take this up directly at our November 20 hearing. I intend to get clear answers about how this happened, what corrective actions are underway, and what additional reforms are needed to ensure the District never forfeits these resources again.

Our residents cannot afford to lose a single dollar meant for affordable housing. We will get to the bottom of this and make sure the District does better going forward.
